Island Explorers

Recent increases in obesity rates among urban youth create a need for opportunities in urban areas that encourage physical activity.  Through fun and challenging exercises in natural areas of New York City, youth can stay active while learning how to think critically, work in teams, and develop problem-solving skills.

“Island Explorers” is an outdoor adventure and environmental learning program comprised of a full day of environmental and historical learning, team building and outdoor exploration activities on Governors Island.  Youth also participated in a narrated boat tour of New York Harbor.

Youth learned team building skills by participating in active, group exercises.

The sessions, facilitated by experienced Extension Educators, focused on the development of the teens’ awareness, appreciation and skills related to the urban and marine environment, New York Harbor, science learning, teamwork, communications, leadership and group dynamics.

Accomplishments

§  Reached 160 teens, ages 12 to 17, from all five boroughs during six Fridays in summer 2007.

§  Evaluations showed that the participating youth learned that “good communication is essential for team work” and that the day was “exciting, educational, in a fun way.”
